Los Angeles, CA – October 26, 1999 — In a dazzling twist of nostalgia and digital innovation, 1999, the cult classic cyberpunk action-adventure game from developer NovaCore, has officially dropped its long-awaited Chinatown Showdown Update Part 1, sending shockwaves through the underground gaming scene and reviving memories of the golden age of arcade-era shooters.
Set in a hyper-detailed, rain-soaked 2029 version of Los Angeles, 1999: Chinatown Showdown plunges players into a war-torn district ruled by rival gangs, rogue AI syndicates, and the mysterious Neo-Tai cult. This first installment of a two-part expansion dives deep into the game's lore, introducing new mechanics, story arcs, and a fully reimagined Chinatown district — now a living, breathing urban jungle teeming with hidden lore, side quests, and deadly new enemies.
Key Features of Update Pt.1:
New District: Neon Hua District – Explore a sprawling, interactive version of Chinatown rebuilt from scratch using advanced 3D rendering for the time. From flickering neon signs to hidden back-alley chop shops, every alleyway holds secrets.
The Yakuza Vendetta Campaign – A branching story mission line that follows former street enforcer Rook as he uncovers a conspiracy linking the city’s elite to a forbidden bio-augmentation program.
New Combat System: "Edge Combat" – Introducing dynamic close-quarters combat with weapon-switching, parries, and contextual taunts. Players can now chain together melee strikes, grapples, and cyber-enhanced throws.
AI-Driven Gangs – For the first time in a 1999 title, gangs use real-time tactics and respond to player choices. Resistance isn’t just about firepower — it’s about outthinking your enemies.
Retro Soundtrack Reimagined – A new synthwave and lo-fi hip-hop score composed by legendary 90s DJ K-Blade, with remastered tracks from the original 1997 soundtrack.
Developer Statement:
"We’ve been waiting 15 years to give fans the Chinatown experience they’ve begged for," said lead designer Jun Sato in a live-streamed announcement. "This isn’t just an update — it’s a resurrection. We rebuilt every pixel, every line of dialogue, and every pulse of the city’s heartbeat. This is 1999 reborn."
The update is available now on PlayStation 2, Sega Dreamcast, and PC via the NovaCore Vault. A limited-edition vinyl soundtrack and collectible Rook action figure are also being released in November.
