Anbernic, a popular manufacturer of retro handheld consoles, has announced a suspension of all U.S. orders due to recent changes in U.S. tariff policies. As reported by The Verge, the company advised customers to opt for products shipped from their U.S. warehouse, which are not affected by the new import duties. This allows American customers to continue purchasing with confidence. However, orders requiring shipment directly from China will no longer be processed.
Anbernic is well-known for its affordable Game Boy-inspired clones, typically shipped directly from China upon release, with additional stock stored in U.S. warehouses for faster delivery. Their website offers customers the choice between U.S. and Chinese shipping, but not all products are available from the U.S. Consequently, some sought-after devices like the Anbernic RG CubeXX and RG 406H will be unavailable to American players until further notice.
The Trump administration's implementation of tariffs, reaching up to 145% on Chinese imports, with potential increases to 245% on certain items like electric vehicles, has put pressure on companies. While some businesses might absorb these costs, the burden is often passed on to consumers. This has already led to increased prices for tech and gaming products, including Nintendo Switch 2 accessories and gaming laptops.
Anbernic has stated they are "working to find a suitable solution" for customers affected by customs fees during this transitional period.
In related news, Nintendo recently unveiled the Switch 2 during a 60-minute Nintendo Direct. Originally, pre-orders were slated to begin in early April in the U.S., but due to tariff uncertainties in both the U.S. and Canada, the pre-order date was postponed to April 24. Despite the delay, Nintendo has maintained the $449.99 price for the Switch 2 console and its games. However, they have raised prices on most Switch 2 accessories to offset the impact of the tariffs.
