Microsoft Unveils and Retracts Xbox UI Mockup with Steam Games Tab

Author : Sarah Apr 24,2025

Microsoft has inadvertently revealed a potential new feature in an upcoming Xbox UI update, which would enable players to view all their installed PC games from various platforms such as Steam and the Epic Games Store. This intriguing detail emerged from a prematurely published blog post titled "Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox," which was quickly spotted and shared by The Verge. The post included an image showcasing Xbox Series X | S consoles alongside other devices, with some screens featuring a "Steam" tab, hinting at a deeper integration between Xbox and popular PC gaming platforms.

This unexpected glimpse into Microsoft's plans was swiftly removed from the post, suggesting the reveal was unintentional. According to The Verge, sources have confirmed that Microsoft is actively developing this feature to not only include Steam but also other PC gaming storefronts. This would allow Xbox users to access a comprehensive list of their installed games and the respective platforms they were purchased from. However, the project is still in its early stages, and no immediate rollout is expected.

The mention of Steam in an official Xbox UI mockup is significant, especially given Microsoft's ongoing efforts to expand its gaming ecosystem across multiple platforms. Over the past decade, Microsoft has increasingly brought its titles to PC and other consoles, with notable releases like Pentiment and Grounded on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. Rumors also suggest that the Master Chief Collection might soon be available on PlayStation.

Microsoft has been actively working to merge the Xbox and PC gaming experiences. The recent "This is an Xbox" campaign underscores this approach, highlighting the variety of devices on which players can enjoy Xbox games. In a conversation with Polygon, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at a future where PC stores like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store could be integrated into Xbox hardware.

Looking ahead, Microsoft's rumored next-gen Xbox, expected in 2027, is said to be more akin to a PC than any previous Xbox console, further blurring the lines between these gaming ecosystems.
