Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in the layoff of an undisclosed number of employees who were part of the project. This news was initially reported by Insider Gaming, referencing a now-deleted LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator involved with the project.
IGN has independently verified the cancellation of this multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) project, which was being developed by a team that previously worked on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. While the exact number of layoffs remains unknown, sources describe it as "small." Additionally, at least one person associated with the project has stated on LinkedIn that their departure was voluntary.
This development is part of a broader pattern of project cancellations and layoffs at Electronic Arts (EA), which began in 2023 with significant job cuts at BioWare and Codemasters. Approximately one year ago, EA announced the layoff of 670 employees across the company and canceled several projects, including the Star Wars FPS, which led to around two dozen layoffs at Respawn. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers being reassigned to other projects and additional layoffs occurring.
IGN has sought comment from Electronic Arts regarding these recent developments.
