The first official trailer for the much-anticipated film "Rust" has been unveiled, marking a significant moment for a project that faced a tragic incident during its production. The movie, starring Alec Baldwin, was marred by a devastating accident in which a prop gun used by Baldwin misfired, fatally wounding cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza on October 22, 2021. "Rust" is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 2, 2025, and you can view the trailer [ttpp] here [ttpp].
The official synopsis of "Rust" sets the scene in 1880s Kansas, where young Lucas McCalister (played by Patrick Scott McDermott), recently orphaned, accidentally kills a rancher and faces the gallows. In a dramatic twist, his estranged grandfather, the infamous outlaw Harland Rust (portrayed by Academy Award nominee Alec Baldwin), orchestrates a jailbreak and embarks on a perilous journey with Lucas toward Mexico. Pursued by the relentless U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a cunning bounty hunter known as 'Preacher' (Travis Fimmel), the duo must navigate the harsh wilderness to evade capture.
The tragic event on set occurred when Baldwin, while demonstrating how he would draw his weapon for a scene, discharged a prop gun believed to be a "cold gun" with no live ammunition. However, the gun contained a live round, leading to the fatal accident. In the aftermath, charges against Baldwin were dropped in April 2023, while Rust's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, responsible for preparing the gun, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison. First assistant director David Halls, tasked with ensuring the gun was safe, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation.
"Rust" made its initial public screening at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November 2024, where it paid tribute to Halyna Hutchins during the credits. Alec Baldwin did not attend the event, but director Joel Souza was present, honoring Hutchins with heartfelt words: "We are here in a place that she loved so much, probably second only to being on set. I want to thank you all for coming and for taking a few hours out of your day to come celebrate my friend and to celebrate her art and her talent. She really was something."
