Earlier this week, Konami delighted fans of classic RPGs with a special live stream entirely dedicated to the beloved Suikoden series. It's been over a decade since the franchise last saw a new entry, specifically a Japanese and PSP-only side story, which left fans buzzing with anticipation about what might be revealed. The announcements that followed stirred a mix of emotions among the community: a new Suikoden anime (thrilling!), a brand new Suikoden game for mobile (interesting!), but with gacha mechanics (disappointing!).
Let's dive into the anime first, aptly titled Suikoden: The Anime. This new production will adapt the events of Suikoden 2 and marks Konami's first foray into animation. While we didn't get a detailed look or learn much about its availability outside of Japan, a brief scenery clip was shared, sparking excitement among Suikoden enthusiasts and potentially offering an accessible entry point for newcomers if it becomes widely available.
The second major announcement, however, left fans with mixed feelings. A brand new game, Suikoden Star Leap, was unveiled, and it's visually stunning, featuring the beloved Octopath Traveler-style of 2D sprites set against 3D backgrounds. The game is set to take place a few years before Suikoden 1 and after Suikoden 5, retaining the series' signature inclusion of 108 characters. Yet, the excitement is tempered by the news that Star Leap will be released exclusively on mobile platforms and will incorporate gacha mechanics and ongoing monetization. This is a departure from the series' tradition of premium releases on consoles and PCs, raising concerns about whether these monetization strategies will impact the gameplay experience or the ability to collect all characters.
In the meantime, Suikoden fans have something to look forward to with the imminent release of the Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. A new trailer for this collection was showcased during the live event, and it's set to launch tomorrow, March 6.
