New Xbox Series X/S Sales Figures Are Bad News For The Consoles

Xbox Series X/S Sales Underperform, But Microsoft Remains Unfazed

November 2024 sales figures reveal that the Xbox Series X/S consoles significantly underperformed compared to the previous generation, with only 767,118 units sold. This pales in comparison to the PS5 (4,120,898 units) and Switch (1,715,636 units) sales during the same period. Even compared to the Xbox One's performance in its fourth year (approximately 2.3 million units sold), the Series X/S lags considerably. These numbers corroborate previous reports indicating declining Xbox console sales.

Microsoft's strategy of releasing first-party titles on competing platforms may be contributing to these lower sales figures. While the company has stated this cross-platform approach will only apply to select titles, many gamers perceive less incentive to own an Xbox Series X/S when key titles are available elsewhere. The relative infrequency of exclusive first-party releases on Xbox compared to PlayStation or Switch further reinforces this perception.

Microsoft's Long-Term Vision:

Despite the underwhelming sales data, Microsoft maintains a positive outlook on the Xbox ecosystem. The company has publicly acknowledged losing the console sales battle, but emphasizes its commitment to creating high-quality games and expanding the reach of Xbox Game Pass. The strong subscriber growth and consistent game releases for Game Pass suggest a viable alternative path to success, even with lower console sales. The potential for future cross-platform releases of exclusive titles indicates a shift in Microsoft's overall strategy, possibly towards a greater focus on digital gaming and software development rather than console hardware. The company's next steps regarding console production remain to be seen.
