Players will explore the new planet Kairos, a world teeming with warring factions, deadly fauna, and desperate inhabitants, all under the oppressive rule of the Timekeeper. Beloved characters such as Claptrap, Moxxi, and Zane return to assist in this epic quest.
The gameplay also highlighted new features, including the innovative Parts system for customizing weapons, additional Gear slots for specialized builds, and the introduction of a new vehicle, the Digirunner, enhancing the player's experience in the vast world of Kairos.
Gearbox Denies Launch Date Change is Influenced by Other Games
Prior to the State of Play, Gearbox Software announced an advancement of Borderlands 4's release date by two weeks, attributing the move to the game's "incredible development work." However, fans have speculated about other influences, particularly the potential release plans of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6).
Given that both Gearbox Software and Rockstar Games, the developers of Borderlands and GTA respectively, are subsidiaries of Take-Two Interactive, many believe corporate strategy might be at play. This theory gained traction following Take-Two Interactive's November 2024 earnings call, where they planned to release GTA 6 in Fall 2025, within the same fiscal year as Borderlands 4.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has previously reassured that there would be no unnecessary clashing of release dates, stating in a November 2024 interview with Variety, "I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily."
Addressing these speculations, Gearbox Entertainment CEO Randy Pitchford took to Twitter (X) on April 30 to clarify that the early release was due to the studio's confidence in their product, stating, "Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date."
Despite the ongoing discussions about the release date, fans are eagerly anticipating the early arrival of Borderlands 4. The game is set to launch on September 12, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates and in-depth coverage by checking out our article below!
