"Breakout Beyond: A Fresh Twist on Atari's Classic"

Author : Aurora Apr 24,2025

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to receive a fresh update with Breakout Beyond, a modern take on Atari's classic brick-breaker game. This new iteration, developed by Choice Provisions—the studio behind the BIT.TRIP series—introduces a unique twist by having the gameplay move sideways, progressing from left to right. The core objective remains the same: break bricks. As players build up combos, the game becomes more visually engaging with intensified lights and effects.

Breakout Beyond introduces special bricks that trigger spectacular effects, from massive explosions to deploying an actual laser cannon. The game promises 72 levels, along with an unlockable endless mode that features a global online leaderboard. For those who enjoy multiplayer gaming, the game offers a local two-player co-op option.

Originally intended as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development path shifted when Atari acquired and decided to complete the project. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed excitement about the game, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated release in 2020, has faced numerous delays and challenges. Despite this, Atari moved to acquire the Intellivision branding and rights last year, although the Amico itself remains unreleased.

Breakout Beyond is scheduled to launch later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
