Clash Royale heads back to the past with new (yet old) Retro Royale mode

Author : Caleb May 04,2025

Supercell is turning back the clock with the exciting new Retro Royale Mode in Clash Royale, taking players back to the game's 2017 launch. Available for a limited time from March 12th to March 26th, this nostalgic mode promises thrilling gameplay and exclusive rewards. As you climb the 30-step Retro Ladder, you'll earn Gold and Season Tokens, enhancing your progression in the game.

In line with Supercell's strategy to keep their top releases fresh, as seen with the recent announcement about ditching Troop Training times in Clash of Clans, Clash Royale's Retro Royale mode is a perfect blend of nostalgia and innovation. The mode, revealed through an engaging trailer, limits players to a pool of 80 cards reminiscent of the game's early days. As you ascend the Retro Ladder, the competition intensifies, and upon reaching the Competitive League, your starting rank will be determined by your progress on the Trophy Road. Your performance in Retro Royale will then dictate your climb on the leaderboard, showcasing your enduring skills.

Interestingly, while I recently discussed Supercell's efforts to keep their games feeling fresh, the introduction of a retro mode highlights the fine line between feeling dated and evoking nostalgia. With the enticing rewards on offer, it's clear why fans are eager to dive in and experience this blast from the past. Moreover, participants who compete at least once in both the Retro Ladder and the Competitive League will earn a special badge for each, adding to the allure of the mode.
