GameCube Controller Compatible Only with Switch 2 Classics, Nintendo Confirms

Author : Nicholas Apr 13,2025

The excitement is building as the Nintendo GameCube makes its way to the Nintendo Switch Online service, coinciding with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. Fans can look forward to a nostalgic journey with classic GameCube games, and there's even a new classic controller in the works. However, there's a catch: the small print on the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer suggests that the new GameCube controller might be exclusively for GameCube games on the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack. The statement reads, "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies that the controller might not be fully compatible with other Switch 2 games, which could limit its versatility.

Interestingly, as noted by VGC, other Nintendo controllers with similar disclaimers have often been adaptable beyond their stated use. Retro controllers have been successfully used in various contexts by players, hinting at potential flexibility. Moreover, this disclaimer is absent from the Nintendo of America version of the trailer, adding an element of uncertainty.

Despite this, the classic GameCube controller has a robust design with ample buttons to handle many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2. It's possible that Nintendo is setting expectations to prevent confusion or frustration if users attempt to use the controller in unintended ways, such as using it as a mouse.

For those less interested in the new controller, there's good news: the GameCube Controller adapter, beloved by fans since the Wii U era, will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via USB. This means long-time users of the adapter can continue to enjoy their favorite setup.

The Best Nintendo Switch Online GameCube Games

As the classic GameCube controller for the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch alongside the new console, eager fans await the pre-order announcement. While the exact pre-order date remains undisclosed, recent U.S. tariffs have added uncertainty to the process.

The addition of the GameCube catalog to the Nintendo Switch Online library marks a significant enhancement, offering subscribers a rich selection of early 2000s titles. At launch this summer, players can dive into classics such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soulcalibur 2. The library is poised to grow, with upcoming additions including Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Strikers, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and more.
