Live-Action Street Fighter Movie Finds a New Director

Author : Eleanor Apr 10,2025

A new Street Fighter movie has selected its challenger, I mean, director. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Kitao Sakurai, known for his work as a writer, director, and executive producer on the absurd comedy show The Eric Andre Show, will helm a new film adaptation of Street Fighter for Legendary Entertainment. Capcom is said to be "deeply involved" with the project, which has already been slated for a release on March 20, 2026.

This marks the latest attempt to bring Street Fighter to the big screen, following the iconic 1994 film that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. While critics at the time may not have appreciated it, the film has since become a cult classic among fans.

Details on casting are yet to be announced, but fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life once again. Initially, the project had Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou attached to direct, but they left the project last summer. The selection of Sakurai, an alum of The Eric Andre Show, suggests that Legendary might be steering the film towards a more absurdist tone. As a fan of Street Fighter's more whimsical elements, this direction is quite exciting.

While we wait for more news on the movie, fans can dive into the latest Street Fighter game, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced its newest fighter, Mai Shiranui. For more on the game, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review [ttpp].
