Tidepool Games has just released a thrilling new game on Android called MageTrain, a fast-paced pixel art 'snakelike' roguelike that fans of Nimble Quest will find familiar. Drawing heavy inspiration from Nimble Quest, MageTrain combines elements of Snake, auto-battlers, and roguelikes into an addictive gameplay experience.
What’s MageTrain Like?
In MageTrain, you control a line of heroes that move like a snake, each hero autonomously attacking as you navigate through an arena. Your role is to strategically manage the positions of your heroes within the line, as their abilities vary depending on their placement. Whether they lead or support, each hero brings unique skills to the table.
At launch, MageTrain introduces nine heroes, including one that uniquely throws birds. As you progress through eight varied dungeons, you'll encounter 28 different enemy types and unlock 30 skills to enhance your team's capabilities. Along the way, you'll gather gold and power-ups to bolster your strategy.
The roguelike nature of MageTrain ensures that no two runs are the same. You'll navigate branching paths, make crucial upgrade decisions, and strive to survive as long as possible. This structure is reminiscent of games like Slay the Spire or FTL, where levels are not fixed, and there's no option to save your progress mid-run. A single mistake, whether crashing into an obstacle or being overrun by enemies, means starting over.
It Isn’t Slow-Paced
The excitement of MageTrain lies in the continuous improvement you experience with each run, even in defeat. You'll quickly learn when to play defensively, when to go all-out on offense, and when to simply survive for another 30 seconds.
MageTrain is now available on Android and is free to play. You can download it from the Google Play Store and dive into the action right away.
