Matthew Lillard Returns for Scream 7
Deadline confirms Lillard's comeback to the franchise that launched his career, reprising his iconic role as Stuart "Stu" Macher from the original 1996 Scream film.
Franchise enthusiasts are questioning how Lillard's character could possibly return given his fate in the first installment. Will he resurrect Stu or portray a new character? The mystery deepens, though Lillard subtly hinted at his involvement through a recent Instagram post shown below.
The original Scream cast partially reunites, with Lillard joining Neve Campbell returning as Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox. The ensemble also includes Scott Foley, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown.
This marks a major turnaround for a sequel that once appeared doomed. Production faced multiple setbacks including Melissa Barrera's November 2023 dismissal following her Gaza-related social media posts. The following day brought Jenna Ortega's departure announcement, removing both Carpenter sisters who had anchored the series since Scream (2022).
The production encountered more turbulence when director Christopher Landon exited in December 2023, describing his brief tenure as "a dream job that turned into a nightmare." Franchise architect Kevin Williamson, writer of the original trilogy and fourth installment, has since taken directorial control.
Though directing team Radio Silence confirmed their departure from the director's chair in August 2023, they remain involved as executive producers. Screenwriter Guy Busick returns to pen the script after co-writing the previous two entries.
Ghostface resurfaces in theaters on February 27, 2026.
