Sony Has Established a New AAA PlayStation Studio

Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio Fuels AAA Game Speculation

A newly established PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California, is generating significant buzz within the gaming community. The confirmation comes via a recent job posting, revealing Sony's 20th first-party studio and its focus on a high-profile, original AAA title for the PS5.

This addition to PlayStation's already impressive roster of first-party developers—including industry giants like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games—naturally ignites excitement. The company's strategic acquisitions in recent years, such as Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite, further demonstrate its commitment to expanding its development capabilities.

The identity of this enigmatic studio remains undisclosed, but speculation points to two potential origins. One theory suggests it's a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the Gummybears incubation project and subsequent staff transition to Sony Interactive Entertainment following layoffs in July 2024.

Another compelling theory centers around Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer and former co-founder of Deviation Games. Deviation Games, which was developing a PS5 AAA title, unfortunately closed in March 2024. However, many former Deviation Games employees subsequently joined PlayStation, leading to speculation that Blundell's team now forms the core of this new Los Angeles studio. This team's longer gestation period compared to the potential Bungie spin-off makes it a strong contender.

While the specifics of the game under development remain shrouded in mystery, fans anticipate a continuation or reimagining of Deviation Games' previous project. Regardless of the project's origins, the confirmation of another PlayStation first-party title is welcome news, though an official announcement from Sony may still be some time away.
