Squad Busters is celebrating its first anniversary with the release of its monumental update 2.0 on May 13th. Since its launch in 2024, the game has struggled to capture the audience that Supercell had hoped for. With this significant overhaul, the developers are aiming to turn things around and boost the game's popularity.
This Isn’t Just a Tweak or Two
Squad Busters 2.0 represents a major reboot, living up to its name. The update brings comprehensive changes to the gameplay mechanics, including how battles are conducted and victories are achieved. One of the most significant alterations is the introduction of Heroes. Players will now select a Hero to lead their squad into battle, and if the Hero is defeated, the game is lost.
Combat dynamics have also been revamped. Players no longer need to halt to engage in combat; movement and attacks are seamlessly integrated, resulting in more dynamic, fast-paced, and intense matches. Additionally, the criteria for victory have shifted. Instead of eliminating all opponents, players need only to defeat the enemy Hero. Some fans are concerned that this change may make the game feel too similar to Brawl Stars.
Squad Busters 2.0 Is Dumping a Lot of Old Features
The update involves the removal of several existing game modes, including Doppelgangers, Double Trouble, Epic Overload, Loot Machines, and Hatchling Herder. Some older skins and progression systems are also being phased out. To compensate for these changes, Supercell will be distributing Hero Points and other in-game items to players.

The urgency behind these changes is evident, as Squad Busters has yet to reach the iconic status of Supercell's other hits like Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars. With the first anniversary approaching on May 29th, Supercell is set on revitalizing interest in the game. They're planning daily piñata events that will offer players the chance to unlock a new Hero, Mortis.
