Baldur's Gate 3: Orpheus' Fate - To Free or Not?

Author : Daniel Mar 13,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal decisions awaits players near the story's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or leaving the Emperor to handle him. After acquiring the Orphic Hammer in the House of Hope, players gain the option to shatter Orpheus's bonds. This choice, however, significantly impacts the party's fate.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before deciding Orpheus's fate, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin by exploring Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries immense weight, potentially leading to companion sacrifices. Successfully navigating these interactions may require high skill checks (30+).

Spoiler Warning: The following details the game's ending.

Should You Free Orpheus?

This decision hinges on player preferences. Early in Act 3, the Emperor warns that Orpheus's imprisonment prevents party members from becoming Illithids. Freeing him risks this transformation. After failing to defeat the Netherbrain, the Emperor presents the choice: free Orpheus or allow him to be assimilated for power.

Siding with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's assimilation, potentially upsetting Lae'zel and Karlach due to its impact on their personal quests. While granting an advantage against the Netherbrain, this outcome may not appeal to all players.

Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to ally with the Netherbrain. Again, party members risk Illithid transformation. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. Interestingly, he’s willing to sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.

In short, choose the Emperor to avoid Illithid transformation; choose Orpheus if you're willing to risk it. The former might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus. The choice is ultimately yours.

What's the Morally Good Choice?

This depends on individual morality, but it boils down to loyalty. Orpheus, as a Githyanki descendant, is the rightful ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's directives can feel demanding. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if impacting the wider world.

The Emperor, a generally benevolent character, aims to stop the Netherbrain and aid the party. He acknowledges necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to Illithid transformation, but it remains a morally sound path. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings, allowing for potentially favorable outcomes for all involved.
