Digital Transformation of Devarattam
This application emerges from my initiative titled "Digital Transformation of Devarattam". It honors the exceptional contributions of Kalaimamani awardee Mr. M. Kumararaman (retired educator), Kalaimani recipient Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar laureate Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti.
I proudly dedicate this platform to these respected masters of Devarattam, along with my mentor Mr. E. Rajakamulu and other revered figures of this art form. Designed to promote awareness, this application primarily focuses on showcasing Devarattam and its distinguished practitioners.
The Art of Devarattam
Devarattam stands as an ancient folk dance tradition from Tamil Nadu. Historically performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, this vibrant dance continues to thrive today.
The dance repertoire encompasses between 32 to 72 distinct movements, with the fundamental 32 steps forming the foundation while additional variations serve as elaborations.
Performance Elements
Devarattam artists traditionally hold handkerchiefs in both hands while adorned with Salangai (ankle bells). The dance unfolds in rhythmic harmony with the distinctive beats of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional percussion instrument.
