Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a Baldur's Gate 4 prototype.
A Playable BG4 Prototype Exists, But Larian Moves On
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CEO Swen Vincke disclosed that a playable Baldur's Gate 4 prototype existed. While acknowledging its potential appeal to fans, Vincke explained that the team, after extensive work on D&D titles, felt it was time to pursue new, original ideas. The prospect of potentially years more development on a similar project led to the decision to shelve BG4, alongside planned BG3 DLC.
High Morale and New Projects
The decision to abandon BG4 has reportedly boosted team morale. Larian Studios is now focused on two undisclosed projects, described by Vincke as their most ambitious yet. The studio plans to release a final major patch for Baldur's Gate 3 in Fall 2024, including mod support, cross-play, and new endings.
Potential Return to the Divinity Series
Given Larian's prior work on the Divinity series, speculation points towards a new entry in that franchise. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been hinted at previously, Vincke suggests the next Divinity project will be unexpected.
In essence, Larian Studios is prioritizing fresh creative endeavors after the success of Baldur's Gate 3, leaving behind a playable, but ultimately unlaunched, sequel.
