Welcome to our exclusive IGN First series this April – dedicated entirely to The Outer Worlds 2. Here's your first look at real-time gameplay as we infiltrate the N-Ray Facility, showcasing the game’s enhanced mechanics and redefined level design. What immediately stands out is Obsidian’s deeper RPG approach, drawing from their legacy and immersive sim inspirations like Deus Ex and Dishonored.
While first-person RPGs have always featured these elements, The Outer Worlds 2 expands with refined systems like a fully-realized stealth mechanic, improved melee options, and skill-based silent takedowns. A new stealth damage indicator (a purple health bar above enemies) lets you gauge if an attack will secure a one-hit kill. Guards now detect corpses, but a new skill allows instant disintegration to avoid detection.

Mid-mission, you acquire the N-Ray Scanner, revealing key objects and cloaked enemies through walls – crucial for both puzzles and combat encounters. Invisible foes roam the facility, emphasizing the scanner's strategic importance. This is just one way gadgets deepen gameplay dynamics.
Interlocking RPG systems now offer greater build diversity, while combat evolves with Destiny-inspired gunplay improvements. Sprint-sliding and ADS mobility enhance firefights, and Tactical Time Dilation (TTD) returns with fresh applications – like shooting grenades midair during bullet time. Throwables expand tactical options without compromising the RPG core.
While narrative details remain sparse, dialogue now integrates skills more organically. One scene shows medical expertise or combat stats influencing responses to a wounded NPC, Exemplar Foxworth. New companion Aza, a reformed cultist, also hints at deeper character-driven interactions.
Where the first game established foundations, The Outer Worlds 2 fully realizes Obsidian’s vision – blending their Fallout: New Vegas legacy with modern FPRPG design. Throughout April, we’ll explore character builds, the revamped flaws system, weapon variety, and expanded scope through interviews with key developers like Leonard Boyarsky. Stay tuned to IGN for continuing coverage!
