Hulu may be bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially reprising her iconic role as Buffy, though the series will focus on a new Slayer. Gellar's involvement would be as a recurring character.
Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in talks to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
While Whedon oversaw the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and its related film, he has faced accusations of creating a toxic work environment during production.
Plot details remain scarce beyond the focus on a new Slayer and Gellar's potential return.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight demons, vampires, and other supernatural creatures. Aided by friends Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles, the series ran for seven seasons (1997-2003). A spin-off, Angel, also aired during this time, and the story continued in canonical comic books.
