Does Civilization 7 Have Cross-Play and Cross-Progression (Civ 7)?

Author : Amelia Mar 25,2025

Sid Meier's iconic turn-based strategy series, *Civilization*, ushers in a new era with the launch of *Civilization VII*. Available across a wide array of modern gaming platforms, one of the key questions players have is whether *Civilization VII* supports cross-play and cross-progression.

Yes, *Civilization VII* does support cross-play across different platforms, but there are significant caveats to consider. To participate in cross-play, players must have an active 2K account linked to their chosen platforms. While cross-play works seamlessly among PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, the experience becomes more complex when involving Nintendo Switch users. The Switch version has limitations, such as smaller map sizes and fewer player slots in certain historical ages. Specifically, the Switch cannot support standard or larger map sizes, and multiplayer games on this console are limited to four players in the Antiquity and Exploration Ages, and six players in the Modern Age. Therefore, if a Switch player joins an online match, these limitations will apply to all participants. While *Civilization VII* is still enjoyable on the Switch, players should be aware of these constraints when engaging in cross-play multiplayer.

*Civilization VII*'s cross-progression system is straightforward, provided players maintain an active 2K account. By linking their 2K accounts across various platforms, players can ensure their progress is tracked and synchronized. Whether you're switching between a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or a PC, your game progress will be saved and accessible across all linked platforms. This feature, a nod to the modern gaming landscape where players often own multiple devices, was included at launch, unlike *Civilization VI*, which introduced it post-release. Whether you're gaming on a Steam Deck, Switch, or at home on a PC or console, *Civilization VII* ensures your journey through its expansive world-building gameplay remains uninterrupted.

*Civilization VII* is set to release on February 11.
