A live-action Dungeons & Dragons series, titled "The Forgotten Realms," is reportedly in development at Netflix. This exciting project is being helmed by Shawn Levy, the director of Deadpool & Wolverine, and Drew Crevello, known for his work on WeCrashed, who will serve as the writer and showrunner. The series is set within the iconic Forgotten Realms, the same fantasy world that served as the backdrop for the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the acclaimed video game Baldur’s Gate 3.
According to Deadline, this adaptation represents one of Netflix's most ambitious ventures into the fantasy genre to date. Although Crevello has penned the pilot and taken on the role of showrunner, both Netflix and Hasbro have remained tight-lipped about the project. Nellie Andreeva from Deadline mentioned that after extensive negotiations, the series is now set to move forward with further development at Netflix. If successful, this could pave the way for an expansive Dungeons & Dragons universe.
Despite the buzz around the new series, there's been no update on a sequel to the fan-favorite film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Star Chris Pine expressed enthusiasm for returning in a sequel and was optimistic about its prospects back in November 2023. However, Paramount Pictures, which released the original film, has yet to greenlight a follow-up. Paramount CEO Brian Robbins indicated that a sequel could be on the cards, but only if produced with a reduced budget.
In other Dungeons & Dragons media news, Amazon's Secret Level anthology series has included a D&D animated segment, keeping the franchise alive across different platforms.
