11 bit Studios, the creators of Frostpunk, surprised fans with the announcement of Frostpunk 1886, a remake of the original title powered by Unreal Engine. Revealed via a post on X on April 24, the game promises a fresh take on the beloved classic.
The announcement highlighted a new Purpose Path, long-awaited mod support, and enhancements that preserve the original’s essence. In a detailed Steam post on April 24, the developers shared their vision for revitalizing the iconic game.
Departing from their in-house Liquid Engine used for the original, 11 bit Studios leveraged Unreal Engine 5 for Frostpunk 2 and saw untapped potential for the first title. “We aim to elevate the experience with enhanced visuals, higher resolution, and Unreal’s advanced capabilities,” they explained.
Targeting a 2027 Launch

The studio confirmed Frostpunk 1886 is in active development, with a planned release in 2027. Designed to welcome newcomers while delighting longtime fans, the game aims to be a replayable masterpiece.
Future content, including potential DLCs, was also teased. 11 bit Studios plans to release titles more frequently than their previous five-year cycles, starting with Frostpunk 1886. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to Frostpunk 2’s free major update on May 8, a console release this summer, and more, per the game’s roadmap.
