The highly anticipated God of War Live Action TV Series is undergoing a major overhaul, with key creative team members departing the project. Here's the latest on these changes and what Sony and Amazon have planned moving forward.
God of War Live Action Series Reboots As Well
God of War Show Not Canceled
Recent reports have confirmed that the God of War TV series is starting anew. Showrunner Rafe Judkins, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have exited the project, despite having already developed multiple scripts. Sony and Amazon are opting for a fresh creative direction.
Cory Barlog, Creative Director at Santa Monica Studio, will continue his role as an executive producer, joined by PlayStation Production's Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Vertigo's Roy Lee, and Santa Monica Studio's Yumi Yang. The project remains on track, with Amazon and Sony actively seeking a new showrunner, producers, and writers to steer the series in a new direction.
More to Come, Despite the Delays
The collaboration between Amazon and Sony for the God of War TV adaptation was first announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, following the success of the 2018 game reboot. This move is part of Sony's broader strategy to adapt its critically acclaimed video game franchises into films and TV shows, which led to the establishment of PlayStation Productions in 2019. Alongside the God of War series, a TV adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn with Netflix was announced, with plans for more adaptations of beloved older franchises.
Sony has already brought several of its games to the screen, including Naughty Dog's Uncharted in 2022 and the highly acclaimed The Last of Us TV series in 2023, which is set to return for a second season in 2025. Other releases include the Gran Turismo film in 2023 and the Twisted Metal TV series in the current year. Upcoming projects in development include adaptations of Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the recently announced Until Dawn film, slated for release on April 25, 2025.
