How To Unlock Multiple Pets in Stardew Valley
When you start a new character in Stardew Valley, you have the option to adopt either a cat or a dog to live on your farm as a pet. Initially, the game limited players to one pet per save file, but the 1.6 update changed that, allowing for multiple pets.
To unlock the ability to adopt more pets, you must first maximize your friendship level with your current pet. This involves ensuring their water bowl is filled daily with your Watering Can, except on rainy or snowy days when it fills automatically. Additionally, pet them once a day; a heart bubble will appear over their head to confirm the interaction. You can monitor your pet's friendship level in the "Animals" tab of your pause menu.
Once the friendship meter is full, you'll receive a notification from Marnie via mail, informing you of the opportunity to adopt additional pets available at her shop, located south of your farm. If you haven't adopted your first pet by the end of your first year, Marnie will send the notice at the start of Year 2.

Upon receiving Marnie's notice, visit her shop during its open hours from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). At the counter, select the "Adopt Pets" option to view a list of 12 available Pet Licenses, which include five variations of dogs and cats, as well as two types of turtles. Each license comes with a cost, so ensure you have enough gold before making your selection.

How To Get Supplies for Pets in Stardew Valley
After choosing your new pets, head to Robin's carpentry shop in the northern part of Pelican Town to purchase Pet Bowls. These bowls are essential as they provide water and serve as a "home" for your pets, preventing their friendship meter from decreasing. Neglecting the bowls can lead to your pets running away, resulting in a loss of companionship and investment.
Pet Bowls are available under Robin's "Construct Farm Buildings" menu, costing 5,000g and 25 x Hardwood (harvested with a Copper Axe or better). It's advisable to build these bowls before adopting new pets to maintain their friendship levels.
For additional pet amenities, you can visit Marnie's Ranch to purchase decorative items like Doghouses and Cat Trees. These items enhance the aesthetic of your farm but do not affect your pets' friendship meters.
