Three Kingdom Heroes brings top-level AI challenges to chess-like duels, coming soon

Koei Tecmo is bringing a fresh take on the Three Kingdoms franchise to mobile with Three Kingdoms Heroes, a chess and shogi-inspired battler launching January 25th. This new entry retains the series' signature art style and epic storytelling, making it an accessible entry point for newcomers while offering familiar comfort for longtime fans. Players command famous figures from the Three Kingdoms period, utilizing a wide array of unique abilities and strategic maneuvers in turn-based board battles.

However, the true standout feature is the GARYU AI system, developed by HEROZ—the creators of the world champion shogi AI, dlshogi. GARYU promises an unprecedented level of challenge, adapting and learning as it battles players, offering a truly lifelike and engaging opponent. While AI boasts often fall short, HEROZ’s track record—consistently outsmarting top shogi grandmasters—suggests Three Kingdoms Heroes will deliver on its promise of a remarkably challenging and rewarding experience. The prospect of facing such a sophisticated AI, mirroring the strategic brilliance of the Three Kingdoms era itself, is undeniably compelling.

ytThe only way to win is not to play The GARYU AI, developed by HEROZ (creators of the world-champion shogi AI, dlshogi), is a key selling point. While AI claims often generate skepticism, HEROZ's proven success in the shogi world—dominating the World Shogi Championships for two years and defeating top grandmasters—provides strong evidence of GARYU's potential. While comparisons to Deep Blue and its controversies are relevant, the potential for a truly challenging and adaptive AI in a game steeped in strategic warfare is undeniably exciting.
