The beloved Suikoden franchise is making a comeback, albeit in a slightly unexpected form. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS platforms. This free-to-play title is slated for release later this year, though a precise date remains undisclosed.
For the uninitiated, Suikoden, initially launched in 1995, is a celebrated RPG series developed and published by Konami under the creative direction of Yoshitaka Murayama. Loosely inspired by the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, the series—known as Suikoden in its Japanese iteration—has captivated players with its intricate political narratives, the mystical True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. Eleven installments, including spin-offs, have graced the gaming world, the last arriving in 2012. Rather than a direct sequel or a full-scale revival, Konami is opting for a mobile game experience with Suikoden STAR LEAP.
What Awaits Players?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh roster of characters, yet retains the series' hallmark of assembling 108 heroes. Staying true to the series' aesthetic, the game employs pixel art graphics. A preview can be viewed below:
The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes said to have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, son of the village chief, embarks on a transformative journey after a devastating attack on his village. Accompanied by Hisui (his servant with a mysterious emotional block), Shirin (his childhood friend with a strong moral compass), and Shapur (a former general turned butler), Hou strives to restore peace.
While anticipation is high, the game's gacha mechanics have sparked some debate within the community. Long-time fans have expressed a desire for a more traditional sequel.
