Casual builders will enjoy the vibrant primary colors and the large, easy-to-assemble pieces, making it a sure hit among all ages. Priced at $169.99 at the LEGO Store, the LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart set falls under the broader LEGO Mario category, hinting at the potential for more expansive Kart sets in the future. While smaller playset-scaled Kart sets are already available (see at Amazon), the demand for larger sets featuring characters like Luigi in a Sports Coupe or Princess Peach on a Cat Cruiser is evident.

Comprising 17 bags, the set includes two separate builds: the Standard Kart and Mario. The Kart's construction begins with a LEGO Technic mesh, forming the floorboard using pins and reinforced bricks. The body shell components, including rockets/exhaust pipes, side panels, and the steering mechanism, are attached using rods and clamps. The steering mechanism is a highlight, ingeniously designed to integrate form and function, allowing the front wheels to turn with the steering wheel, mimicking a real-life kart.

The Kart's build is surprisingly intricate, requiring meticulous attention to detail to achieve its deceptively simple yet sophisticated appearance. It’s a testament to the craftsmanship that goes into creating a model that retains a playful charm while showcasing complexity.

LEGO Mario Kart Construction Process

Following the Kart, the Mario figure is built using a similar technique to The Mighty Bowser set from three years ago. The construction involves assembling the torso, legs, arms, and finally, the head and hat. The hat, in particular, adds complexity with its bent design achieved through additional smaller builds attached to Mario's head.

LEGO Mario Figure Construction

Building Mario allowed me to appreciate the finer details, such as the hair peeking out from under his hat, the markings on his gloves, and the rolled-up cuffs on his jeans. It's similar to piecing together a jigsaw puzzle of a famous painting, where you notice nuances that might otherwise go unnoticed. My 10-year-old son and I found this process particularly engaging, enhancing our appreciation for the character's design.

Unfortunately, Mario cannot be detached from the Kart as his torso is anchored directly onto a gray plate attached to the seat. While this is understandable from a design perspective, it does limit the versatility of the Mario figure. Enthusiasts may look forward to DIY modifications to make Mario stand independently.

LEGO Mario and Kart Integration

Despite this limitation, the final product is visually stunning. The Kart comes with a buildable stand that allows for tilting and rotating, enabling dynamic posing such as uphill or downhill driving or navigating a banked turn. I posed my Mario gripping the steering wheel with one hand and pumping the air with the other, capturing his iconic "Whoo-hoo!" spirit.

LEGO's direction with Mario-themed sets over the past three years, including The Mighty Bowser and The Piranha Plant, has been commendable. The LEGO Mario Kart: Mario & Standard Kart set continues this trend, delivering a high-quality build that balances intricacy with visual appeal. With 1972 pieces, set #72037 is priced at $169.99 and will be available exclusively at the LEGO Store starting May 15. Preorder now to secure your set.
