Civilization VII (Civ VII) is making a splash in the VR world with its upcoming Meta Quest 3 and 3S exclusive release this Spring 2025. This marks the franchise's first foray into virtual and mixed reality gaming, a significant step for the long-running strategy series.
Immersive Strategy on Meta Quest 3
2K Games and Firaxis Games unveiled the VR version at the Civ World Summit on February 8th, 2025. Executive Producer Dennis Shirk expressed enthusiasm for this new era of strategic gameplay, stating, "We're just days away from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!"
Meta's Director of Games, Chris Pruett, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the momentum in mixed reality gaming and emphasizing Civ VII VR as a "genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans." Interestingly, while Civ VII launches on PlayStation consoles, a PSVR2 version is not currently planned.
Command Table Immersion and Multiplayer Mayhem
Civ VII VR transports players to a virtual command table, offering a unique perspective on the familiar gameplay. Players can zoom in for detailed views or survey their empire from a commanding height, mimicking the feel of a physical board game. The experience seamlessly transitions between immersive VR and mixed reality modes, adapting to the player's environment.
The game offers single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer options for up to four players using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can team up against AI opponents or challenge each other in head-to-head battles. Online multiplayer necessitates both a 2K and Meta account.
Addressing Player Feedback and Future Updates
Firaxis Games acknowledged player feedback from Civ VII's early access period (February 6th, 2025, for Deluxe and Founder's Editions). The team is prioritizing UI improvements to enhance usability and clarity, addressing concerns raised about map readability and information access.
Further updates will include community-requested features like multiplayer teams and diverse map types. A quality-of-life update is slated for March, focusing on UI refinements, AI balancing, diplomacy adjustments, and bug fixes.
