Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unexpected feature: the ability to function as computer mice. While the practicality of this mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence originates from Vietnamese customs data obtained by Famiboards user LiC, who has previously uncovered information regarding a Nintendo parts supplier. This data, a rich source of Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024, recently revealed entries for polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended for "game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, strongly implies a mouse-like functionality for the upcoming console's controllers.
LiC identified two "mouse sole" model numbers: LG7 and SML7. These designations haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new products. The listed size of 90 x 90mm suggests the tape is large enough to cover the entire back of each Joy-Con, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While novel for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. Lenovo's Legion GO, released in 2023, already incorporated this feature in its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic slider for improved surface control.
The Legion GO also features magnetic controller rails, a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities suggest the Legion GO might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
