Nintendo Switch 2 Patent Suggests Joy-Cons Can be Rotated and the Console Played Upside Down

Author : Julian Mar 05,2025

Nintendo's latest patent hints at a revolutionary Joy-Con design for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The patent reveals that the new Joy-Cons will utilize magnets, allowing for upside-down attachment to the console. This differs significantly from the original Switch's rail-based system.

As reported by VGC, this magnetic attachment, coupled with gyro mechanics similar to those found in smartphones (allowing screen orientation to adjust automatically), will offer players unprecedented flexibility. The orientation of the Joy-Cons won't affect functionality, meaning players can reposition the headphone jack and buttons to their preferred side. This innovative design could also unlock unique gameplay possibilities.

The patent explicitly states: "The user can use the game system by mounting the right controller and the left controller on the opposite side to the main body device," and further explains the reorientation of the headphone jack for optimal user experience.

Further details regarding this and other features are expected to be unveiled during the upcoming Nintendo Direct event on April 2nd (6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time).

While Nintendo hasn't confirmed a release date, speculation points towards a launch between June and September. This aligns with reported hands-on events concluding in June and a statement from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon suggesting a pre-September release.

The Switch 2 was initially teased in January with a brief trailer showcasing backward compatibility and a second USB-C port. Many details remain shrouded in mystery, including the function of a new Joy-Con button, fueling various fan theories.
