A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, the Switch has fewer direct ports of these titles than other consoles. This list compiles ten favorites – four GBA and six DS – showcasing the best of what's available beyond the Nintendo Switch Online app.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge, this GBA version offers a solid alternative and a worthwhile comparison. Its streamlined gameplay makes it accessible even to non-shooter fans.
Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on GBA. This side-scrolling action title, while initially rough around the edges, marks the beginning of an excellent series. It's the perfect entry point for fans of the franchise.
Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, but justified by its distinct gameplay. Unlike Mega Man Zero, this is an RPG with a unique blend of action and strategy. Its innovative concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later entries show diminishing returns, the first game offers substantial fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
Another collection with multiple worthwhile titles, Aria of Sorrow stands out as a personal favorite, even surpassing Symphony of the Night for some. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is consistently engaging. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult classic with limited reach, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge’s DSiWare release propelled the Half-Genie Hero to greater fame. This title laid the groundwork for Shantae's continued success across multiple console generations.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Included in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game is exceptional, though later entries also garner praise.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick offers unique gameplay as a ghost using abilities to save people and uncover the mystery of your death. A thrilling and highly recommended experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Included in Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The Castlevania Dominus Collection contains three excellent DS titles, with Dawn of Sorrow standing out due to improved button controls over the original touch controls.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Included in Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS systems, but this HD port offers a playable experience. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a substantial RPG despite its quirks.
