The Burning Monolith: Path of Exile 2's Endgame Challenge

The Burning Monolith, a unique map node on the Atlas of Worlds, presents a formidable endgame challenge in Path of Exile 2. Similar to the Realmgate, it's located near the starting area of your mapping journey, but accessing it requires significant effort.

Unlocking the Burning Monolith

The Monolith is the gateway to the Arbiter of Ash, the game's toughest pinnacle boss. Your first attempt to activate the Monolith's door initiates "The Pinnacle of Flame" quest, demanding completion of three Citadels: Iron, Copper, and Stone. Each Citadel yields a Crisis Fragment; combining these three fragments on the Monolith altar unlocks the Arbiter of Ash encounter.

Prepare for a Brutal Fight

The Arbiter of Ash boasts devastating attacks and immense health, making meticulous build preparation crucial before engaging. This boss is considered the most challenging pinnacle boss in the game.

Locating the Elusive Citadels

Finding the three Citadels is the primary hurdle. Their locations are randomly generated for each player's Atlas, making consistent strategies difficult. However, community observations suggest these approaches:

  1. Directional Exploration: Choose a direction on the Atlas and persistently explore, unlocking Towers for a broader view.
  2. Corruption Focus: Target map nodes exhibiting corruption, clearing them efficiently and unlocking nearby Towers.
  3. Clustered Appearance: Citadels often appear in close proximity; finding one increases the likelihood of discovering the others nearby.

Citadel hunting is a late-game activity, requiring a powerful build and considerable boss-killing experience.

A Costly Alternative

Crisis Fragments, the rewards from Citadels, can be purchased through in-game trading websites or the Currency Exchange. However, their rarity makes them expensive. Weigh the cost and your time investment before deciding whether to hunt or buy.
