PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Hole-in-One
If 2K were to poll gamers on which pro sports franchise they'd most like to revive, a resurrected NFL 2K would undoubtedly top the list. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's clear there's much to appreciate.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience is evident in 2K25's polished gameplay. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly extensive course selection (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the core gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overlooked.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Using a controller, the right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) felt intuitive. Difficulty levels adjust the swing's sensitivity, allowing for casual or competitive play. The "Perfect Swing" mode offers a more forgiving experience, while higher difficulty settings punish imprecise inputs. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee position adds strategic depth. Improved ball physics also enhance the realism. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, certainly helped the initial experience.
MyCareer mode receives a welcome boost with narrative elements, similar to other sports titles. The inclusion of Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing) adds a humorous touch. Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC unlocks gear that further enhances player abilities. The addition of weekly Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) provides ongoing goals.
The MyPlayer creator allows for reasonable character customization, further enhanced by the inclusion of skill trees. While multiplayer wasn't tested, the promise of ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies sounds appealing, evoking memories of casual online play in games like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent performance across various aspects without any major flaws. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it positions itself as a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
