Guns Undarkness Unveils Free Steam Demo at Next Fest
Get ready to experience Guns Undarkness, a tactical stealth RPG helmed by Shoji Meguro, the composer behind the Persona series and Metaphor: ReFantazio. He's joined by Ilya Kuvshinov, the character artist known for Ghost in the Shell, and rapper Lotus Juice, a prominent figure in the Persona 3 soundtrack.
Meguro's impressive career at Atlus spans back to 1995, where he composed music for iconic titles like Shin Megami Tensei and the Persona franchise. In 2021, he transitioned into independent game development while continuing his collaborations with Atlus. Since then, he's been working on this sci-fi stealth action JRPG, published under Kodansha Game Creators Lab.
Initially revealed at Indie Live Expo Winter 2021 and successfully funded via a Kickstarter campaign in 2022 (reaching all stretch goals!), Guns Undarkness will offer a free demo during the upcoming Steam Next Fest, starting February 24, 2025. Early Access is planned for later this year.
Inspired by Metal Gear Solid and Persona
According to its Steam page, Guns Undarkness is a turn-based tactical JRPG drawing inspiration from classics like Metal Gear Solid and Persona. The game is set in a dystopian 2045, where the world teeters on the brink of collapse. Players assume the role of a private military company operative, embarking on missions with allies to uncover the truth and potentially save humanity.
Gameplay blends stealth and turn-based combat. Strategic movement and evasion are key to gaining an advantage in battles. Turn-based combat utilizes various firearms, requiring players to carefully plan their actions and utilize their team's strengths.
The demo will offer roughly 20 minutes of gameplay, including tutorials covering controls, the battle system, weapons, and early-game strategies. Early Access is slated for Spring 2025 on PC, offering approximately 10 hours of playtime. A specific release date is yet to be announced.
