Sony Patents New DualSense Gun Accessory

Enhanced Immersion: Sony Patents DualSense Gun Attachment

A newly published Sony patent unveils a captivating controller accessory: a gun attachment designed to transform the PlayStation DualSense into a more immersive handheld firearm. This innovation highlights Sony's ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of gaming technology.

While the gaming world buzzes with PlayStation 5 Pro speculation and new game releases, Sony quietly continues its R&D efforts. This latest patent, filed in June 2024 and published January 2, 2025, details a gun-style attachment that adds a "trigger" mechanism to the DualSense. Leveraging the controller's existing haptic feedback, this accessory aims to significantly enhance realism, especially in first-person shooters and action-adventure games.

The attachment, as depicted in patent figures 3, 14, and 15, connects to the DualSense's base, allowing users to hold the controller sideways like a handgun. The space between the R1 and R2 buttons cleverly functions as an aiming sight. Figures 12 and 13 hint at potential compatibility with VR headsets and other unspecified accessories, though details remain scarce.

This isn't a guarantee of consumer availability. As with many exciting Sony patents, official announcements are needed before expecting this accessory on store shelves. The gaming industry's relentless pursuit of innovative hardware continues, from next-gen consoles to enhancements for existing peripherals. Gaming enthusiasts should anticipate further updates from Sony regarding this and future patent developments.
