Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor
Ubisoft's open-world title, Star Wars Outlaws, is facing significant challenges, notably underperforming in sales compared to 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Despite initially positive reviews upon its August 2024 release, player dissatisfaction with the combat and stealth mechanics has negatively impacted sales. Ubisoft acknowledged the game fell short of sales projections in September, leading to a sharp drop in the company's stock price.
Adding to the woes, recent reports indicate Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has outsold Star Wars Outlaws. While precise sales figures remain undisclosed, Star Wars Outlaws only reached 47th place in European video game sales rankings for 2024. This underperformance is particularly striking given Star Wars Outlaws is the franchise's first true open-world title.
Several factors likely contributed to Jedi: Survivor's success. As a sequel to the popular Jedi: Fallen Order, it benefited from established brand recognition and critical acclaim upon its April 2023 release. A subsequent update expanding its availability to PS4 and Xbox One further boosted its sales.
Conversely, Star Wars Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing updates and DLC releases. The November 2024 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming Spring 2025 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune" (featuring Hondo Ohnaka), aim to revitalize interest. However, whether these additions will be enough to significantly boost sales remains to be seen. Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment maintain optimism for the game's future, but the current sales figures present a considerable hurdle.
