After over a decade of absence, the beloved Suikoden series is poised for a comeback. The upcoming HD remaster of the first two games aims to reignite the franchise's popularity and pave the path for future installments.
Suikoden Remaster: Reviving a Classic JRPG
A New Generation Awaits
The Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster promises to revitalize this classic JRPG. Director Tatsuya Ogushi and Lead Planner Takahiro Sakiyama expressed their hopes in a recent Famitsu interview (translated via Google) that the remaster will introduce the series to a new audience while rekindling the enthusiasm of longtime fans. They envision this remaster as a springboard for future Suikoden titles. Ogushi, deeply connected to the series, acknowledged the absence of the late series creator, Yoshitaka Murayama, noting Murayama's likely desire to be involved. Sakiyama, who directed Suikoden V, highlighted his ambition to reintroduce Suikoden to a broader audience, hoping for continued expansion of the IP.
Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster: A Closer Look
Based on the 2006 Japan-exclusive PlayStation Portable collection, this remaster brings enhanced visuals and gameplay to modern platforms. Konami has promised significantly improved HD background illustrations, creating a more immersive experience. While the original pixel art sprites remain largely intact, they’ve been refined.
A new in-game Gallery offers access to music, cutscenes, and an event viewer, allowing players to revisit key moments. These features are conveniently accessible from the main menu.
This remaster addresses past issues. The infamous shortened Luca Blight cutscene from the PSP version of Suikoden 2 has been restored to its original length. Furthermore, some dialogue has been updated to reflect modern sensibilities; for instance, Richmond’s smoking habit has been removed to align with Japanese smoking regulations.
Launching March 6, 2025, on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster promises a renewed experience for both veterans and newcomers alike.
