The release of the Nintendo Switch 2 this year has been highly anticipated, promising a more powerful iteration of the beloved original console. However, the global economic uncertainty and the ongoing trade war between the United States and China have complicated its launch. Priced at $450 USD with key titles like Mario Kart World at $80 USD, the Switch 2's cost has become a contentious issue amid rising prices in the gaming industry.
To understand global reactions to the Switch 2, I consulted with editors from IGN's international branches. The feedback has been mixed, with some regions praising the console's hardware upgrades such as the 120hz refresh rate, HDR, and 4K output, while others criticize the absence of an OLED screen and other features.
How the Rest of the World Feels About the Switch 2
IGN Italy's editor-in-chief, Alessandro Digioia, reports that their readers are largely dissatisfied. Key concerns include the price, the lack of an OLED screen, no trophy/achievement system, and a modest launch lineup. "While some third-party announcements were welcomed, many readers expected more from Nintendo's first-party titles," Digioia notes.
Pedro Pestana from IGN Portugal echoes these sentiments, adding, "Personally, I'm not that impressed with Switch 2, as it is basically a souped up Switch 1 - better in every sense, but without the novelty factor of the original. That being said, I reckon it's gonna come down to the games, and Mario Kart World looked damn nice."
In contrast, IGN Benelux's Nick Nijiland notes a more positive reception despite the price. "We have seen in our region that the console has been received very well. People complain about the price, but at the same time the console sold out within hours," he says. Similarly, IGN Turkey's Ersin Kilic reports positive feedback on the improved screen quality, though the absence of Hall Effect in Joy-Con 2 was criticized.
IGN China's Kamui Ye highlights a mixed response. "The reveal event has been met with widespread disappointment due to its lackluster launch title lineup and perplexing regional pricing strategies," Ye explains. However, they add that "optimism persists among core fans regarding Nintendo's long-term plans," citing backward compatibility and hardware refinements as positive aspects.
Hardware Price and Tariff Fears

The Switch 2 is set to launch at $450 USD in the United States, with pre-orders delayed due to tariffs. IGN Germany's Antonia Dressler states, "In Germany, nobody is really worrying about the tariff situation regarding the Switch 2," but notes significant complaints about the console's pricing, especially when compared to the PS5.
IGN Africa's Zaid Kriel points out that the Switch 2's pricing now places it in direct competition with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, no longer offering a cheaper alternative. "It's no longer a cheaper alternative, and that could be a problem, especially with the increase in game prices Nintendo has introduced," Kriel says.
IGN France's editor-in-chief, Erwan Lafleuriel, notes that the pricing overshadowed other aspects of the reveal. "The debate is raging mainly about prices, but I believe because it was kind of easy to overshadow a reveal lacking in many other aspects," Lafleuriel says.
In Brazil, IGN's Matheus de Lucca highlights the impact of the trade war, stating, "The current tariff war initiated by the United States makes the scenario even worse for Brazil, since the Real is a weak currency compared to the dollar and an increase in the price of the Switch 2 in the United States will most likely have a huge impact on the whole of Latin America."
In Japan, IGN Japan's executive producer, Daniel Robson, discusses the region-locked version of the hardware at a lower price point. "I think Nintendo knew they couldn’t go over 50,000 yen in Japan – the weak yen means the relative pricing scale is very different here," Robson explains, adding that the price is still high but more competitive than the PS5.
Software Price Remains the Biggest Pain Point
Despite hardware costs and tariffs, the pricing of software has been the most significant issue. The $80 USD price tag for Mario Kart World has sparked widespread concern. IGN Italy's Digioia notes, "Many feel that Nintendo's new pricing structure is unjustifiable, especially in light of recent increases that came with the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S era."
IGN Germany's Dressler adds, "Especially with the 90 Euro for Mario Kart World, that is a record for a video game in Germany; not even titles like Assassin’s Creed cost as much." The $10 charge for Switch 2 Welcome Tour has also been criticized.
In China, IGN's Ye mentions that while there are no official plans for a release, the gray market might offer more affordable options. "Observations from social media comments under our content show most players find the official price acceptable," Ye says, adding that the console is seen as more cost-effective than handheld PCs like Steam Deck.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is poised for success as an upgrade to a beloved console, but the high cost of games during economic hardship and uncertainties around tariffs and stock availability in various regions pose significant challenges. Despite these issues, the excitement for the Switch 2 remains strong globally, albeit with notable caveats.
