The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know
The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their beloved game. Will their investment of time and money be rendered obsolete by a new iteration? This question remains largely unanswered, but recent comments from Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick offer some insight.
GTA Online's continued success, even a decade after its launch, is undeniable. This longevity, and its significant profitability, likely influenced Rockstar's decision to prioritize live service updates over story DLC for GTA 5. However, the prospect of a new GTA Online (perhaps GTA Online 2) raises concerns about the future of the current version.
Will players be forced to abandon their progress and investments in the existing GTA Online? This is a major worry. Why invest now, in early 2025, when a new version could launch within months?
In a recent interview, Zelnick addressed this concern, drawing a parallel with Take-Two's handling of NBA 2K Online. NBA 2K Online, launched in 2012, was not discontinued after the release of NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017. Both games coexisted, allowing players to continue engaging with their preferred version.
Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. We've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them."
This suggests that a potential GTA Online 2 might not replace the original. Continued player engagement with the current GTA Online could lead to its continued support alongside any new version.
However, much remains unknown about GTA 6. Only a trailer and a release window have been revealed. With Borderlands 4's release slated for September 2025, Rockstar will need to provide more information about GTA 6 and its online component soon. Until then, the question of GTA Online's future remains open.
