Tencent, a leading Chinese technology company, has reportedly secured a majority stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition significantly impacts both companies' futures.
Tencent's Majority Stake in Kuro Games
Tencent Now Holds Over Half the Shares
Tencent's share in Kuro Games has increased to approximately 51.4%, following the acquisition of roughly 37% additional shares. This, coupled with the departure of other shareholders, grants Tencent controlling ownership and makes them Kuro Games' sole external investor. This expansion builds upon Tencent's initial investment in Kuro Games in 2023.
Despite the significant stake, reports from a Kuro Games source to Chinese news outlet Youxi Putao indicate that Kuro Games will maintain its operational independence. This approach mirrors Tencent's strategies with Riot Games (developers of League of Legends and Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans and Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement emphasizes that this acquisition fosters a "more stable external environment" and supports its long-term independent growth strategy. Tencent has not yet publicly commented on the acquisition.
Kuro Games, a prominent Chinese game developer, is celebrated for its successful action RPG, Punishing: Gray Raven, and its recent open-world adventure RPG, Wuthering Waves. Both games have achieved remarkable success, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue and receiving ongoing updates. The success of Wuthering Waves is further highlighted by its nomination for the Players' Voice award at The Game Awards.
