Sony's policy requiring PSN tethering for even single-player PC games has sparked significant outrage among gamers. This restriction, coupled with regional limitations on service availability, severely impacts the accessibility and sales of modern Sony titles on PC.
Recently, Sony announced some modifications to their policy. While the concept of PSN tethering isn't entirely abandoned, certain relaxations are forthcoming. Tethering will become optional for the following titles:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players who choose to tether their accounts to PSN will receive the following incentives:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest at the game's start, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points to unlock features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In a November investor call, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the backlash against PSN connection requirements, citing security and order as justifications. While he framed the restrictions in terms of service-based games, he failed to clarify how mandatory PSN accounts enhance security for single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök.
Times have changed, and this policy continues to be a point of contention.
