Xbox Keystone Console Design Emerges in Leaked Patent

A recently unearthed patent offers a glimpse into the design of the canceled Xbox Keystone console. While previously hinted at by Phil Spencer, the project ultimately failed to materialize.

During the Xbox One era, Microsoft explored various strategies to re-engage lapsed fans. This included the launch of Xbox Game Pass, a service that has since expanded significantly and continues on the Xbox Series X/S. Prior to Game Pass, Games With Gold provided free games, a program discontinued in 2023 alongside the introduction of multiple Game Pass subscription tiers. Since Game Pass's inception, Microsoft has alluded to a dedicated console for cloud-streaming Game Pass content. A newly discovered patent reveals this device's potential design and functionality.

Windows Central recently uncovered details of the Xbox Keystone, envisioned as a streaming device akin to Apple TV or Amazon Fire TV Stick. The patent features images showcasing a circular top design reminiscent of the Xbox Series S. The front panel includes an Xbox power button and a rectangular slot, possibly a USB port. The rear panel displays an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and an oval connector, likely for the power supply. A pairing button for controllers is located on one side, with ventilation slots on the back and bottom. A circular base elevates the device for optimal airflow.

Why the Xbox Keystone's Cancellation?

Microsoft has been conducting xCloud testing since 2019, a process that would have been crucial for optimizing the Xbox Keystone. The projected price point was between $99 and $129, but Microsoft couldn't achieve profitability at this price. This suggests that the technology needed to stream Xbox Game Pass games via xCloud exceeded the target cost. Considering that Xbox consoles often launch at cost or at a loss, producing the Keystone for $129 or less proved unfeasible. However, future price reductions in technology could potentially revive the project.

Despite Phil Spencer's previous comments, the Xbox Keystone's existence wasn't entirely confidential. While seemingly abandoned, the underlying concept could inform future endeavors.
