Indie Developer Cellar Door Games Releases Rogue Legacy Source Code

Cellar Door Games, the developer behind the acclaimed 2013 roguelike, Rogue Legacy, has made a generous contribution to the gaming community by releasing the game's source code for free. The announcement, made via Twitter (X), highlights the studio's commitment to knowledge sharing. "In the pursuit of sharing knowledge," the developer stated, making the code available on GitHub under a specific, non-commercial license. This allows for personal use and study of the game's mechanics.

Rogue Legacy Source Code Release

The GitHub repository, managed by developer Ethan Lee, provides a valuable resource for aspiring game developers. The move has been widely praised on social media, recognizing its potential to foster learning and innovation within the indie game development scene.

Rogue Legacy Source Code Release

Beyond educational benefits, this release offers a crucial safeguard against game loss. By making the source code publicly available, the game's longevity is ensured, even if it were to be removed from digital storefronts—a significant step in digital game preservation. This initiative has even attracted the attention of the Rochester Museum of Play, with its Director of Digital Preservation suggesting a collaboration.

It's important to note that while the source code is freely available, the game's assets (art, music, and icons) remain under proprietary license and are not included. Cellar Door Games encourages contact for inquiries regarding the use of these assets or for projects extending beyond the license's stipulations. The developer's GitHub page clearly states the intention is to facilitate learning, inspire new projects, and enable the creation of tools and modifications for Rogue Legacy 1.
