This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles boasting diverse game libraries. I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded all expectations, building a legendary library with titles still re-released today. While these games once challenged Nintendo's dominance, now everyone can enjoy them across various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a perilous threat. Expect vibrant visuals, engaging gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly less impressive, both games are essential.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII revolutionized the Western RPG market, becoming Square Enix's greatest success and propelling the PlayStation to the top. The remake exists, but this is the original FFVII experience, complete with its iconic (and admittedly dated) polygonal graphics. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, launching it onto a much larger stage. While later entries became more eccentric, the original delivers a thrilling, action-packed adventure reminiscent of GI Joe. Its engaging gameplay is a highlight, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on the Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter into 3D. While the polygonal graphics show their age, the vibrant colors, unique enemy capture system, and inventive bosses create a compelling shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
While Chrono Cross faced the impossible task of following Chrono Trigger, it stands on its own merits. Beyond the comparisons, it offers a clever and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. The soundtrack is legendary.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While I appreciate most Mega Man games, Mega Man X4 stands out for its superior design and cohesiveness within the Mega Man X series. The Legacy Collection allows you to judge for yourself.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
A surprisingly first-party Sony title, Tomba! blends platforming and adventure elements masterfully. Created by the mind behind Ghosts ‘n Goblins, it initially appears lighthearted but presents a significant challenge.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure with a satisfying combat system.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut is a classic. While quality varied across the series, the original Tomb Raider focuses on tomb raiding, showcasing the franchise at its best. This collection includes the first three games.
moon ($18.99)
A unique Japanese release, moon deconstructs the traditional RPG, offering a punk-inspired adventure game with a thought-provoking message. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach is intriguing.
