Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e on Wednesday morning, the newest and most affordable model in its current lineup. Replacing the 2022 iPhone SE, the iPhone 16e marks a shift from the significantly lower price point of its predecessor. Priced at $599, it narrows the gap with the $799 iPhone 16 released last fall. Pre-orders begin Friday, February 21st, with availability starting Friday, February 28th.
The iPhone 16e is also the first Apple device to feature the company's C1 cellular modem. Following the success of its in-house M1 and A-series chips, this new modem is a crucial component. Apple's past experience with "Antennagate"—connectivity issues with the iPhone 4—hopefully informed the development of the C1, ensuring reliable connectivity for the iPhone 16e.

From the front, the iPhone 16e closely resembles the iPhone 14, boasting an identical 6.1-inch OLED display with a 2532x1170 resolution and 1200-nit peak brightness. While not as sharp or bright as the iPhone 16, it includes the Action button and a USB-C port, although it lacks Camera Control.
The rear design is more distinct, featuring a single 48MP camera, similar to the iPhone SE. Sharing similarities with the iPhone 16's main camera, it omits sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic Styles, and adjustable portrait mode focus. The selfie camera, however, appears identical and includes Face ID.
The phone utilizes an aluminum frame, glass back, and Apple's Ceramic Shield on the front. While Apple continues to market this Ceramic Shield as "tougher than any smartphone glass," it's worth noting a newer, supposedly "two times tougher" version exists, raising questions about the iPhone 16e's durability, especially considering the wear observed on the iPhone 16 during review.
Internally, the iPhone 16e showcases Apple's product stratification. The iPhone 16 already had a performance gap with the 16 Pro due to the latter's A18 Pro chip. The iPhone 16e features an "A18" chip, but with a 4-core GPU compared to the iPhone 16's 5-core GPU, while maintaining the same number of CPU cores. This suggests a further performance reduction compared to the iPhone 16. However, the inclusion of the Neural Engine allows for Apple Intelligence features.
The iPhone 16e's lower price point necessitates compromises. While not overly compromised, the discount is less substantial than previous iPhone SE models. At $599, it's Apple's cheapest offering, but the 2022 iPhone SE launched at $429 with the same chip as the $799 iPhone 13. Although its design was dated, the nearly 50% discount was significant. The iPhone 16e, while based on a slightly older design (with minor yearly tweaks since 2018), offers a less dramatic price reduction.
The iPhone 16e's actual performance remains to be seen. With Android competitors like the OnePlus 13R offering compelling alternatives around the $600 price point, Apple may face challenges attracting buyers outside its existing ecosystem.
