Capcom's Revival of Classic IPs Continues: Okami and Onimusha Lead the Charge
Capcom has confirmed its ongoing commitment to reviving classic intellectual properties (IPs), with the Okami and Onimusha franchises spearheading this initiative. This article delves into Capcom's plans and explores potential candidates for future revivals.
Capcom's Strategy: Unearthing Dormant Gems
In a December 13th press release announcing new entries in the Onimusha and Okami series, Capcom explicitly stated its intention to continue leveraging its extensive library of dormant IPs. The new Onimusha title, set in Edo-period Kyoto, is slated for a 2026 release. A Okami sequel, helmed by the original game's development team, is also in the works, though its release date remains undisclosed.
Capcom emphasized its aim to create "highly efficient, high-quality titles" by reviving these beloved franchises. Concurrent projects include Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2, both anticipated in 2025. This strategy doesn't preclude the development of entirely new IPs, as evidenced by recent releases like Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal.
Fan Favorites and Future Titles: Insights from the "Super Elections"
Capcom's February 2024 "Super Elections," a fan vote for desired sequels and remakes, offers valuable insight into the company's future plans. The results highlighted strong demand for titles like Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire.
Many of these franchises have been inactive for extended periods—Dino Crisis and Darkstalkers haven't seen new installments since 1997 and 2003, respectively, while Breath of Fire 6 (an online RPG) closed in 2017. The overwhelming fan support for these IPs, coupled with their inclusion in the "Super Elections," suggests a high probability of future revivals or remasters.
While Capcom remains discreet about its specific roadmap, the "Super Elections" provide a strong indication of which dormant IPs might be next in line for a comeback. The enthusiastic response to Onimusha and Okami further reinforces the company's commitment to satisfying fan demand for classic titles.
