Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just announced an exciting lineup for Destiny 2 under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy," featuring two new expansions and significant updates for both paying and free players.
The "Year of Prophecy" introduces four major content releases, split between two paid expansions and two free major updates, ensuring a thrilling year ahead for all players.
Kicking off the year is Rite of the Nine, a free update available now that offers a fresh take on dungeon diving. Whether you're a seasoned dungeon crawler or a newcomer, you'll find familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, but with unique twists and the chance to reconnect with Orin alongside refreshed dungeon weapons.
Mark your calendars for July 15, when the first paid expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, launches. This expansion marks the beginning of a multiyear saga centered around the enigmatic Nine, who predate even the Traveler. You'll encounter new characters, including the ally Lodi and the Warlock Vanguard, Ikora. The new destination, Kepler, is inspired by Destiny 2's dungeons and encourages deep exploration with puzzle-solving, pathfinding, and new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.
Simultaneously, on July 15, Bungie will roll out "major core game innovations," including revamped armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This update allows players to easily choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops, tailored for solo players seeking quick, self-contained gameplay. With 50 new modifiers, players can customize their gameplay and chase specific rewards, while curated activity rotations keep the content fresh.

On September 9, the Ash & Iron major update will be released, followed by the second expansion, Destiny 2: Renegades, on December 2. The year concludes with the Shadow & Order major update on March 3.
Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, blending Destiny's storytelling and gameplay with elements from the iconic sci-fi franchise.
This news comes as a welcome update for the Destiny 2 community, especially after Bungie laid off 220 staff members in July 2024, following another 100 layoffs less than a year prior.
While Destiny 2 keeps Bungie busy, they are also working on the reboot of the classic franchise, Marathon, which was revealed in May 2023. IGN's recent hands-on preview of Marathon's alpha state suggests it will satisfy the Bungie PvP itch, with a full release planned for September on PC and consoles.
