Square Enix and Tencent Teaming Up for Potential FFXIV Mobile Game

A recent report from Niko Partners, a leading video game market research firm, suggests a mobile version of Final Fantasy XIV is in the works, a joint project between Square Enix and Tencent. This follows earlier, unconfirmed reports of the collaboration.

Limited Confirmation, High Anticipation

The report details a list of games approved for release in China by the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA). Among them, a mobile FFXIV title developed by Tencent is listed. While Niko Partners' analyst Daniel Ahmad mentioned on X (formerly Twitter) that the game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version, he emphasized the information stems largely from industry speculation and lacks official confirmation from either Square Enix or Tencent.

A Strategic Move for Square Enix

Tencent's involvement aligns with Square Enix's declared strategy of expanding its major franchises to multiple platforms. This multiplatform approach, announced earlier this year, aims to broaden the reach of titles like Final Fantasy. Given Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market, this partnership appears to be a key component of Square Enix's broader strategy. However, until official announcements are made, the existence of this FFXIV mobile game remains unconfirmed.
